Baby Boy

I'm sure many of you are curious to why it has taken over a week to annouce that baby number three is a boy. Well, it is because the ultrasound didn't go as smoothly as hoped. I went in last Thursday and there was only one ultrasound tech and no doctor there. The tech said that the baby's stomach was small and that she wasn't able to get a good reading of the heart. So I left unable to talk to the doctor and was disappointed for another boy and wondering why the baby's stomach was small. I didn't get home until about 6:00 that night after running errands and picking up Kory. There were messages from the ATU and my OB-GYN to call concerning my ultrasound. I was panicked that something was wrong and it was too late to call and find out what it was. So, I called first thing Friday morning and my doctor wasn't in and neither was the nurse. I called the ATU and they told me that I needed to go in and have a Fetal echocardiogram. That was all she could tell me. I panicked once again and was unable to get an answer about what was going on. I scheduled my appointment and was a wreck the rest of the weekend.
I called first thing Moday morning and wasn't able to talk to my doctor again, but the nurse just told me that they were couldn't get a good picture of the heart. I asked if they had seen anything wrong and they told me no just needed to get a better picture.
Well, today I had the fetal echo cardiogram and again it didn't go as well as we hoped. The baby has a heart defect called Truncus Arteriosus. It is when the pulmonary artery (the artery that takes the blood to the lungs to get oxygen) and aortic valve(the valve that takes the oxygenated blood to rest of the body) are combined into one. So the oxygenated and the deoxygenated blood mix. Within 48 hours of being born, he is going to have to have open heart surgery to form two valves. This is not a perminate fix, he will have to have a couple more surgeries during his life to put in a new tube as he outgrows the one in him. We are hoping that everything works out, but feel that we are lucky to have one of the best childrens hospitals in the country. Please just keep us in your prayers.

I can't imagine the stress you are feeling right now - I am so sorry! I have a good friend whose baby had a heart defect and underwent surgery immediately after birth. I'll find out what the condition was - maybe it would help to talk to someone who went through the same thing. You will definitely be in my prayers!

Jill, I am so sorry. That is such hard news to hear. I have taken care of many babies following that surgery and similar ones and the good news is that those babies do very well and CHOP really is a fabulous hospital. Your family is in my prayers.
